What you get in exchange is real federation support via ActivityPub, meaning your instance can connect with other Funkwhale servers, plus built-in podcast support and radio modes that Navidrome doesn’t have.

Airsonic-Advanced — the Java option
A community-maintained fork of the original Airsonic project. It runs on the JVM, which means a higher baseline memory requirement (Airsonic-Advanced’s Java heap alone needs a minimum of 512MB) and a setup process that’s slightly more involved than the other two, though still Docker-based and manageable.

How This Fits Into Your Home Lab
If you’re following our beginner’s home lab guide or running the $350 example build, any of these three run comfortably alongside the rest of your service stack (AdGuard, Vaultwarden, Immich, etc.) without needing dedicated hardware. Navidrome in particular is close to “free” in terms of resource cost on a 16GB mini PC.
One distinction worth making: this is different from Jellyfin, which we already recommend in the beginner guide as a general media server. Jellyfin handles video and TV as well as music, but its music-specific experience and mobile app ecosystem aren’t as polished as a dedicated Subsonic-API server. If music is your primary use case, a dedicated server from this list will usually feel better day-to-day than trying to make Jellyfin’s music section do the job.
FAQ
Can I run more than one of these at the same time to compare them? Yes, and it’s a reasonable way to decide — spin each up in its own LXC container or Docker container pointed at a read-only copy of your library, try the mobile apps for a few days, and keep whichever one you actually prefer using.
Do any of these require re-organizing my music files? No. All three read your existing folder/file structure and metadata tags without moving or modifying anything. Point them at your library as read-only if you want extra peace of mind while testing.
Which one has the best web player if I mostly listen from a browser? Navidrome’s web UI is generally considered the most polished of the three for browser-based listening — modern, fast, and actively developed. Funkwhale’s is also solid and adds the radio/podcast browsing Navidrome lacks.
Is transcoding necessary, or can I just stream FLAC directly? You can stream FLAC directly on your home network without issue. Transcoding matters mainly for remote listening over cellular data, where a lower bitrate saves data — all three handle this via FFmpeg, bundled in their official Docker images.
